A TENS device is also called a nerve stimulator. The device consists of a device (usually battery-powered) that generates weak electrical impulses, and connected to it some electrodes that you stick on the skin at the level of the pain.
Through electrodes on the skin, the device delivers small, electrical impulses to your body. These stimuli relieve pain in various ways:
- Blood circulation is improved.
- Production of endorphins (natural painkillers) is stimulated.
- It disrupts the way your nerves transmit the pain signal to the brain, making you feel less pain.
How do you use a TENS device?
A TENS device is very easy to use. The device has different programmes and can therefore be perfectly adjusted to your needs.
You can use the device at home or even at work, but for optimal results from the treatment, it is better to get advice from a doctor, nurse or physiotherapist beforehand.
Note: apply the electrodes to clean skin!
It is important to apply the electrodes on clean and dry skin. This way, conduction works better and the electrodes last longer. So cleanse your skin beforehand. To make the electrodes stick better, you can lightly moisten the skin with your finger.
Never place an electrode on broken or irritated skin. Do not wear the electrodes while bathing, showering or swimming.
Tip:
Store your electrodes in the fridge. Then they remain usable for longer.
