TENS treatment is an effective, clinically proven pain treatment. The treatment is absolutely safe. At least, if you start it with common sense and use the device properly. Therefore, before starting a treatment, get advice from a professional.

The biggest risk with TENS treatment is habituation. It may be that after a while your body gets used to the treatment and its efficiency decreases as a result. This is no reason to panic. By adjusting the parameters on the TENS device or choosing a different programme, you can counteract the habituation effect.

Note!

TENS electrodes should not be stuck to the carotid arteries.

Choose the right TENS material

If you want to get the best results from your TENS treatment, make sure you work with quality equipment. On the one hand, this means that you need an excellent TENS device, but on the other hand it also means that you use the right electrodes. Therefore, always choose electrodes from StimPads. Not only do they last longer, but thanks to the high-quality carbon, they conduct the current impulses better and more evenly.

Is long-term use of TENS harmful?

TENS treatment rarely, if ever, has side effects. Long-term use is not harmful, but sometimes people with sensitive skin react to the electrodes if they treat the same skin surface for too long. In that case, choose other electrodes that your skin has fewer problems with. (Take a look at the range of StimPads)

When should you not use TENS?

TENS has a positive effect on a lot of pain conditions Yet there are some cases where it is better not to use TENS.

  • Do not use TENS on skin diseases or on open wounds.
  • Avoid TENS if you have a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator or suffer from cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Avoid TENS if epilepsy is suspected or diagnosed.
  • Are you pregnant? If so, consult your doctor about whether TENS can be used.
  • Do not use TENS if you have an active or suspected cancer. Stimulation of the tumour can promote the growth and spread of cancer cells.

Also important to know: you should not use a TENS device when driving a car or operating machinery, or when showering or swimming. It is also better not to use TENS when you are sleeping.
